7 Homestaging Tips Ideal for Christchurch Homes

Our beautiful garden city certainly has some amazing homes, even though many of the historical older homes are no longer. The main purpose of styling the interior of a house or apartment is to create an ambience which is inviting for viewers, but also showcases the positive features of the property. While there are multiple reasons for wanting to hire a property stylist, the most common one is to ready the property for sale or rent. Being able to show prospective buyers or tenants the key or unique features of the property, plus helping them visualise living there, makes the sale or renting process much faster for the owners. It can also help significantly increase the purchase or rental price too!

While our home styling gallery is full of stunning images of properties we have styled, we thought we'd take the time to share with you seven of our tips on how you too can stage your home. They are:

  1. Start at the entrance - whether your front door opens into a hallway or into a lounge, make your visitor's first impression a great one! A vase of flowers on a side table in the hall is always welcoming. In a lounge, ensure there is a clearly defined pathway to walk through.
  2. Furnishings matter - an old shabby couch is unlikely to impress and will give off a poor impression to visitors. Use a fitted cover in neutral colours, using cushions in luxurious fabrics for splashes of colour.
  3. Depersonalise - you want to help your visitors imagine themselves living in your home - not you! Remove photos, children's drawings and even toothbrushes from your visitor's view.
  4. Make it sparkle - it's vital that your home is cleaned thoroughly from top to bottom. The inside of your cupboards, drawers and wardrobes should also be tidy.
  5. Declutter - too many possessions, be it books, pictures, furniture or ornaments make a place feel small. Pack these away and place into storage before showing people through your home.
  6. Use neutral colours - too much personality in your home will most likely be off putting. Stick to neutral colours for linen, towels and furniture, adding pops of colour to brighten or focus attention on an area.
  7. Pay attention to furniture placement - the positions or areas you set out your furniture matter! Grouping similar furniture types together helps to showcase an area. Placing furniture closer to walls and corners increases the perceived space of a room.
